Get with the Times - Use a Feed Reader

Monday April 21stSoftware, Technology Category

Regular readers of Dilbert are currently kicking and screaming about the site’s new Flash-based design. Personally I don’t mind it, but at the end of the day it matters not.

Why?

The site finally has it’s own feed which puts the comics straight into your favourite feed reader. If you can see it in your reader, why bother visiting the site? Haven’t these people got used to alternate delivery mechanisms yet? Why whinge when they actually have better access?

If I was going to have a gripe, I’d complain about the fact that Dilbert.com doesn’t have the appropriate header tags which specify the alternate format for feed in the site’s html source. Poor form.

Anyway, skip the site, hit the feed :)

The website is a bit annoying in that it shows the comic as an image while the flash version is loading, which means you’re halfway through reading the first panel before it disappears for a second and reappears in the flash container. Also, having to scroll through the Sunday comic is a PITA. It’s using flash pointlessly.

I think I’ll follow your advice and just use the feed. It’s about time I started using those RSS thingies!

Dude, I would have thought that you’d have taken up RSS reading yonks ago! I’m surprised :)

Defo go the feed. You won’t look back, and it’s SO easy to keep track of what you have and haven’t read.

I’m a creature of habit! The annoying thing about RSS is, if I subscribe to feeds using the built in browser features, then I’ll end up with the same articles twice at home and at work.

Therefore I need a web-based solution, and there are so many I don’t know where to look…

I know the feeling. I had the issue too, but there are so many solutions. I use Google Reader, and imho it’s the best. I’ve looked at others like Netvibes and Bloglines but I always come back to Google Reader.

GR also supports Google Gears, so you can do the offline thing too! Supports sync when you get back online. It’s fab :)

OJ, Google Reader is the future. Cheers for turning me onto that vibe. Was using Netvibes as well but SO cluttered. Google Reader is wicked, and being web-based, if you’ve only got a minute to browse and catch up on what’s going on then it’s very handy indeed, no matter where you are…

Aye, I’ve started using it too, and it’s pretty decent! Cheers OJ!
